May 5th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Blog posts by Lia, Good design, Novelty, Obsessed with the Dutch

If you wanted to lure me into a trap, here’s what you should put in there for bait. Marc by Marc Jacobs purses. Free travel upgrades, both in the air and on the ground. And European magazines, particularly if they involve Dutch design. Which is why Liv’ magazine is currently at the top of my [...]

Next Stop: Dutch Fluency!

April 27th, 2010 · 7 Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Dutch language school, Novelty, Obsessed with the Dutch

Hooray! My tax refund came yesterday, which means I’ll be booking my time at Dutch Princess School soon! It’s probably worth explaining why on earth I’m going to spend thousands of dollars to get to fluency in Dutch. And most importantly–why Dutch? Literally every time I mention that I’m trying to learn Dutch, the person [...]

The Countdown Begins for Dutch Princess School

March 14th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Dutch language school, Novelty, Obsessed with the Dutch

If everything works out as planned, right around by July 1, 2010, I’ll be attending Dutch Princess School. Its real name is Talen Instituut Regina Coeli, but really, who can remember all that? Let me recap the situation. Originally, I started learning Dutch for my job at a the Guidebook Company That Shall Not Be [...]

Utrecht (and Not the Art Shop)

February 25th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Obsessed with the Dutch, Urban archipelagos

Over the last year or so, Utrecht has come up again and again as a great up-and-coming destination. This recent article, “A Dutch Town That Nurtures Its Quirks,” provided me with all the convincing I need to add it to the itinerary of my next trip. It describes the appeal of the town without resorting to hyperbole and boosterism.

Can We Please Retire the “Going Dutch” Pun in Headlines?

February 20th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Celeb spotting, Obsessed with the Dutch

So hooray for the Dutch, the modeling world’s new phenomenon. Maybe, as the Brazilian models coincided with the (in my mind, unfortunate) global trend of the Brazilian, these Dutch lovelies can help bring about a more bike lanes, sensible and accessible health care, and a widened, open-minded world view. (It could totally happen, butterfly-effect-style.)

Friday Fail: Reconstituted Brochure-Wear Edition

February 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Fail 'o' the Day

I swear, I won’t make the Friday Fail about Carol Pucci every week (as I did with this previous post). But she’s making it hard to ignore her.

When I think of the position of travel writer for a major metropolitan newspaper, to me, it should involve research, reporting, and/or opinions. Possibly even insight

When Mad Men Met Hard Days Night…By Bike

February 14th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Dutch bikes, Obsessed with the Dutch

I love this incredible video of Dutch cyclists. The men completely remind me of Paul’s grandfather, from one of my favorite movies. Via Amsterdamized.

Shop Talk: Favorite Bookstores, Part I

February 13th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Favorite Bookstores, Obsessed with the Dutch, Recommended sights, Shop talk

For pure charm within the heart of Amsterdam, I love this corner pictured above, complete with the Athenaeum Boekhandel. That store strikes me as slightly quirkier than the Selexyz branch nearby–it’s chock full of amazing art books, postmodernist musings, and novels by an embarrassing number of authors I’ve never heard of.

Happy Warme Truiendag!

February 12th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Novelty, Obsessed with the Dutch

Today, February 12, is Warme Truiendag! To translate the site and the general idea, it boils down to: Wear a sweater, lower your thermostat, reduce global warming. So straightforward, so Dutch. I’ve got my wool on now.
