I am in love with British Airways. There’s no other way to say it. I’m obsessed (having signed up for a credit card with them to get more miles). I spend time thinking about them, and how to fly them next. It’s like the worst high-school crush ever, and all because of Club World. Betty [...]

KLM and Marcel Wanders’ Perfect, Practische Plates
December 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Obsessed with the Dutch, Transportation bliss
As a little pick-me-up, I bought a cheerful new lipstick at MAC recently, designed by Dutch wonder-designer Marcel Wanders. I liked the look of the lipstick tube itself, which resembles a turned wooden leg of a table.
Which leads me to the pleasing setup above, also from Meneer Wanders–the business-class table setting of KLM. Evidently, this has been a project of his for some time. It’s lovely, with the scalloped edges that instantly remind you that you’re not on US Airways.

School’s Out for Summer!
July 6th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Betty, Novelty
I can be somewhat nostalgic at times, particularly when I think about summer vacations. I loved the final weeks of school, when glorious and infinite summer days, and unbridled adventure stretched in front of me. I’m experiencing a grown-up version of that now, as this Friday will be my final day at my job. After [...]

News Flash: Flying Isn’t Green
June 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Betty, Fail 'o' the Day, Wary of the advice of others
Lia and I do like Virgin America Airlines, despite their in-flight texting (personally not a fan) and other idiosyncrasies. They’ve taken innovative approaches to differentiating themselves in the marketplace, which I always appreciate. However, when I saw this on Virgin America’s Twitter feed, I was immediately annoyed. Look, I can appreciate attempting to green your [...]

Fail ‘o’ the Day: Other Passengers
April 28th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Fail 'o' the Day
I’d like to sing the praises of this Slate piece by John Dickerson, a child’s treasury of jackass flight passengers. Partly it’s because I was so ticked off with my fellow passengers on my last domestic flight–a.k.a. “the tragedy of the commons“–that I completely reversed my previously stated opinion about Spirit Airways charging for carry-on [...]
Retro Stewardess Chic

As described in a brief write-up and online photo gallery in the New York Times Style section, the Delta Museum has posted a fun collection of photos of stewardess uniforms. Because a curator was involved, it’s specific: prop-era outfits (1940-1959) and jet-age flight attendant uniforms. Dig this option from renown Hollywood designer Edith Head: We [...]
Fail ‘o’ the Day: Pringles Do Not Equal a Finished Flight
March 16th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Fail 'o' the Day
I’ve flown Virgin and liked it very much compared with other airlines. Good in-flight entertainment, like the Johnny Depp Actors’ Studio on demand, shown above, that my seatmates and I liked. These days, it takes very little to keep me content. But I’ve never been in a situation where potato chips and water were being [...]
