Boats and Battlements on the Amazing Race

September 27th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia

The premier of “Amazing Race” was a J. Crew special, racing from Glostasheah, Mass. to the wilds of Tewkesbury, England. (But, yes, there actually is a Tewksbury, Mass., too.)

I loved this episode for a few reasons, including the fact that when I researched guidebooks in Britain for the Company That Shall Not Be Named, I got lost for hours (often in driving rain), as did just about everyone on the episode. While the tickets were billed to the contestants as a chance to see Stonehenge, in reality, they mostly got a full tour of the petrol stations of the A303, where they pulled over repeatedly to ask directions. (Hello, deja vu!)

Shop Talk: The Regional Assembly of Text

September 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Shop talk

It’s good to know yourself. And to own your own oddities. For me, that means that I proudly declare my obsessions with luggage, Dutch bikes, and–let’s be honest–the Dutch overall. Another item for that list? Paper products. Notebooks, file folders, calendars…I have stacks of them and they all make me absurdly happy. Which is why [...]

Please Forgive This Work-Based Interruption

September 19th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia

Sorry for the radio silence, neweltites. Both of us have been slammed with work, but, happily, my work has taken me to the Big Apple, where I took this photo in the warm summerish weather yesterday.

As already mentioned a couple dozen million times, we ♥ New York.

As already mentioned in a previous post, I had a vision for my time at the Regina Coeli Language Instititute. (You can see a video of my daily Dutch commute, if you like.) I knew it was a unique opportunity, and I wanted a quiet respite for my time there. Most guidebooks that cover the [...]

For Sale: Cultural Cliches

September 8th, 2010 · 1 Comment · Blog posts by Lia, Wary of the advice of others

Trafficking in cultural cliches is a weird business to be in. It’s an annoying but omnipresent aspect of most travel writing. Everyone does it. But some writers are unapologetic in their laziness, seeming to love to summarize whole countries in shorthand, as if they’re making a delicious balsamic reduction of a whole nation. Maureen Dowd [...]

Lady Gaga Sets Off Security Alarms at YVR

September 7th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Celeb spotting

Lady Gaga recently passed through the Pacific Northwest, and decided a leather-studded dress-and-shoe combo were the perfect option for the Vancouver International Airport. Knowing that she is the patron saintess of newelty, we had to post this photo of her in action. Lady Gaga in travel action is a mighty amazing thing.

The Oatmeal’s Travel Annoyance-Off

September 3rd, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Quick Post

The Oatmeal can be a little too South Park for me most of the time, but this comic from yesterday, “The crap we put up with getting on and off an airplane,” made me laugh out loud. It’s a visual representation of one of our most prevalent travel fails: Other passengers.
