The World Cup is exactly one month away, and this means that soon South Africa, and all of its beauty and problems, will once again take center stage on the international playing field.
I was there about a year ago, and it was my first time on the Continent. Before this trip, I had been obsessing about Africa for a long, long time. I was overwhelmed at the choices before me in terms of what country I would visit first. Should I venture to Kenya and explore the Masai Mara? See the amazing red sand desert and skeleton coast of Namibia? Wade through the other worldly Okavango Delta in Botswana?
I ultimately decided on South Africa because people speak English, it seemed very manageable and I could build an itinerary with a strong mix of city and country.
City: Cape Town is cosmopolitan yet laid back. It’s gorgeous with its Dutch architecture and is set at the base of dramatic Table Mountain. The city’s environs include amazing wine country, penguin colonies, and beautiful coastal towns.
Country: Kruger National Park is one of the largest game parks in Africa, and is in the northeast part of the country. My time there was like Jurassic Park meets summer camp.
Stay tuned for more entries about South Africa throughout the month.

Great, I never knew this, thanks.
