Big Sky Country.
I was there this past weekend, and it’s true. The sky didn’t disappoint.
If you’ve never been to Montana, their state slogan could fall a bit flat. But the moment you arrive, it really does appear as if the sky is larger, more luminous, than anywhere you’ve been before.
When I wasn’t gawking at the mountains or cloud formations, I spent some of my time in Livingston, which is a funky little town in the southern part of the state. It’s right on the Yellowstone River just north of Yellowstone National Park. In the summertime it apparently has a great art walk, and it’s home to a thriving writing community. In talking to people, they told me it’s much less pretentious than nearby Bozeman.
Bozeman is much larger than Livingston and home to Montana State University, and kind of feels like it’s trying too hard. I got a good chuckle when I heard that it’s often referred to as “BozAngeles” and its inhabitants as “Giddy-uppies.” It reminds me of Bend, Oregon, and Boulder, Colorado. Gorgeous towns, to be sure, but you have to wonder how people can afford their expensive Land Rovers in such small communities.
Livingston, on the other hand, feels real. A cowboy town with an air of bohemian.

nice post. thanks.
