I was recently in Argentina for–gasp–not work, and stumbled upon El Ateneo while in Buenos Aires. The bookstore was amazing. I could have lived there.

Snowy, Sleepy Paris
February 16th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Urban archipelagos
Environmental Graffiti has a wonderfully curated collection of photos of Paris in the snow. Spring has come early to us on the West Coast, so this seems particularly fanciful and magical to me right now. It’s worth clicking over to see the whole collection.
Shop Talk: Surf’s Up in Chinatown

I only bought a set of note cards at Chinatown Boardroom–a great name for a surf shop if ever there was one–but the selection was great, as was the vibe.
What Is the Point of Travel?

As a former writer for a Guidebook Company That Shall Not Be Named, I’m partial to thoughtful essays about why we travel. Guidebook work is about facts and trends, neither of which lend themselves to any reflection whatsoever.
Yesterday I picked up the amazing new McSweeney’s, made in newspaper form. Coincidentally, I had already bookmarked this blog post from Jonah Lehrer on the cognitive inner workings behind why we travel, which is part of McSweeney’s No. 33.

The recent protest made me think of this poster, which I spotted in the excellent MacLeod’s used bookstore in downtown Vancouver last summer.

For pure charm within the heart of Amsterdam, I love this corner pictured above, complete with the Athenaeum Boekhandel. That store strikes me as slightly quirkier than the Selexyz branch nearby–it’s chock full of amazing art books, postmodernist musings, and novels by an embarrassing number of authors I’ve never heard of.
Happy Warme Truiendag!

Today, February 12, is Warme Truiendag! To translate the site and the general idea, it boils down to: Wear a sweater, lower your thermostat, reduce global warming. So straightforward, so Dutch. I’ve got my wool on now.
Friday Fail ‘o’ the Day: Internets Hysteria Edition
February 12th, 2010 · No Comments · Blog posts by Lia, Fail 'o' the Day, Wary of the advice of others
Remember how Amazon.com was going to destroy all bookstores forever? And how there wouldn’t be a single travel agency after online booking became a thing? Hysteria about internet travel writing is kinda like that.
